Alex Song transfer saga takes over from the Robin van Persie transfer saga

Arsenal may well end up selling midfielder Alex Song to Barcelona but only if the price is right. Barcelona vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu was in London yesterday to hold formal talks over the possible move but the two clubs are yet to agree on a fee.

Barcelona are looking to add a defensive midfielder in their ranks who can also play as a centre-back. They had initially targeted Athletic Bilbao’s Javi Martinez, who is now Munich bound, but have failed to trigger the player’s 40m Euro buy-out clause.

The 24-year-old Arsenal midfielder is liked for his versatile role that Barcelona need at the moment. However, the Catalan giants have tabled a valuation of £13m which seems way short of Arsenal’s demand.

The Gunners want at least £18-£20m for the Cameroon international who has three years remaining in his contract. The player himself is aware of the interest, as several Barcelona players have publicly spoken about him linking with the club, but is happy to stay at Arsenal.

Seriously, I think Wenger isn’t so ambitious about keeping his best players. Agreed that RVP has a year on his contract, so we have to let him go so that he won’t be leaving on a free transfer next summer, but what about Song? I will lose faith in him if he finally let Song leave.

You can look at it in 2 ways. The facts or the paper talk. The facts are that Wenger is absoloutly furious with Songs agent for pimping him around other European clubs. Wenger is holding talks with Song today to see if he is commited long term and whether or not he’ll sign a new long term contract. If he doesn’t sign a new contract then Wenger will play hardball and tell him to pack his bags and do one. This is finally the penny dropping. If Song goes then Wenger will bring in a quality replacement. Simple as that.

I dont care for song really as long as he is replaced. my worry is that wenger is naming loads of centre midfielders even now including chamberlain as one of those. its all well and good doing that but next week he will be saying we decided to let walcott leave as chamberlain is a wide player. the fact is yes we do have lots of players in all the positions but at what sort of quality? for example if you take out the best 2 players in each position you are left with a third x1 looking something like this

    mannone
    yennaris boateng miquel coquelin
    frimpong eastmond
    lansbury ramsey eisfeld
    chamakh

ok some might say that is not too bad and in all honesty it isnt. but when you suffer the injuries and international call ups that arsenal do you have to wonder how many more players can we let go.
