We’ve all said – well a majority have said at least, that there is something unusual in the summer signing of South Korean forward Chu Young-Park, was it a marketing ploy just to sell shirts in the Far East , and why fails to actually get any games for us, well for a player who was signed for unsual reasons it seems we have got the raw end of the deal as it appears that after originally paying £3.5 million for an unused forward, we now are having to pay an extra £3 million on top as his military service in his native South Korea has been postponed by 10 years which would make him 37 when he goes for it, this is where the deal gets even stranger as it has emerged that his military service postponement came on August 29th just two days before signing with us.
The South Korean daily, The Choson Iibo reports that Park received the extension on this due to being granted a three year residence permit in Monaco due to having been at the French club for three years previous to signing with us, and he has now been accused by critics in Korea of dodging the mandatory national service because of his age when he finally gets to doing it which will mean that he only be taking part in public services rather than his full active service there.
Park’s lawyer Lee Sung-Hee, has thrown more confusion to the wind by stating:
“Additional negotiations about his transfer fee between Arsenal and AS Monaco only concluded recently, and AS Monaco asked us to make it public after the negotiations came to an end.”
So if that is true it would mean that despite joining in August – well at the end of August, he has only just concluded the the deal with signing for us seven months after joining us, which doesn’t make sense although it may explain that whilst poaching him from under Lille’s nose why arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been very reluctant to play him so far.
None of this makes sense at the moment, maybe one day the truth of why we signed him in a panic rush and then not playing him, something that already has hindered his international career as his captaincy of the national team ha been removed, and you have to wonder why negotiations have taken seven months to conclude?.
One thing is for sure there is certainly something very odd about this deal and has been from the start.

I’m not sure why you;re making us out to be some kind of victim of a heinous scheme becaue his military service seems mutually exclusive to his playing ability. Whether he had 2 years or 200 year before military service doesn’t change the fact that Wenger bought him and we have seen maybe 60 minutes total of him for the whole season. This was a rather terrible buy by Arsene and he needs to write it off ASAP and get in someone who can and will actually play and make a difference.
I had always thought this was the case, Manchester United has dominated the Far East with their popular signing Park Ji Sung and Arsenal wants a piece of the pie , there are million of football supporters in the Far East who has lots of cash to spend, its not a great mystry that Arsenal bought Park Chu Young as well as the Japanese star Ryo Miyaichi,so as to get a foothold in the market before other club do, Ryo alone, if he becomes a star, can net millions for Arsenal in Japan, he is so popular, each time he plays his photo get put on both front and back pages of some Japanese newspapers, its also no coincidence that Arsenal is doing a tour of the Far East this summer, so as to drum up awareness for the brand.
People forget that Arsene is not only a football manager but also an Economist, the purchase of Park Chu Young was more to do with marketing than football playing, he was cheap, needed a club, and has a name to net millions in his native Korea, Arsenal needs the money, at least his signing is bringing in cash, far more than the likes of Bendnter who cost a lot to pay I am yet to see anyone in one of his shirt at a match, I am sure there are thousands in Korea with Parks name on their Arsenal shirt.
Are you kidding me? His incompetence aside, this IS a heinous scheme!! The arrangement was made to pay bonus in the event that the extension will be granted. OK, nothing too crazy about that. The catch is that, such an extension was confirmed even before he was signed! So by keeping it secret, Park and Monaco have duped Arsenal into agreeing an option clause that is guaranteed to be invoked. Monaco has pocketed few quids, and Park succeeded in presenting himself as a bargain buy to facilitate the transfer. Scums, I tell you.
And how does that even change the fact that he’s basically bench fodder? So we have to pay him more now – will he suddenly turn into a 20 goal a season striker now? No. This was a poor buy from the get go by Arsene and we all know it.
PCY being a dud buy… You don’t need to be a football scholar to come to that conclusion innit? Hardly an interesting insight. I’ve mentioned about his incompetence as well. What I’ve tried to convey is that, the fact that he conned us shouldn’t be overlooked. Yes, it was a money misspent already at £3.5m. However, to say that the price being hiked to $6.5m doesn’t make it a worse mistake is illogical.
if that was a move to expand on Asian market,it was a short-term action to get some easy money and a wrong move which has buried any further market moves there!we have sold Park’s shirts to fans from Asia and lets face it,we have cheated on them!they have bought the shirts,he never played for us and fans have realized they were cheated,it has happened once and it won’t happen again!we can say goodbye to Asia market
Yes but did we sign him on a two year deal? Highly doubtful and Arsenal are not a club to sign a player with bonuses included without planning on using that money for that purpose. In Arsenal’s mind they’ve already paid him that money before this news broke so while you might think it’s sketchy, Arsenal already saw it coming, otherwise they wouldn’t have put said bonus clauses into the agreement.
