Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker ‘out for at least a month’, Vermaelen frustrated

It has been reported that giant Arsenal and German international defender Per Mertesacker, has flown back to Germany to be looked over by the German national team doctors, after his quite bizarre ankle injury picked up against Sunderland on Saturday, and by the seems of it will be out of action for at least a month due to ligament damage.

The injury picked up with no-one around him, was strange in itself but also led to Sunderland’s opener at the Stadium of Light, and the 27 year old German international will now miss the games against AC Milan in the Champions League second round first leg, and also the Premier League game against Spurs and the FA Cup fifth round tie back at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light this coming Saturday.

This injury however is somewhat of a relief to Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen, who has voiced his frustration at being asked to play left back whilst Arsenal’s current two choices at left back in Kieran Gibbs – who will return against AC Milan, allowing Vermaelen to return to his natural centre back position, and Brazilian left back Andrei Santos have been injured with lengthy lay off’s.

Speaking on his covering of the left back position, Vermaelen told reporters:

“I’m tired of it. I do it to help Arsenal. It’s a shame but I can’t do anything about it.”

“I don’t think I’m a bad left- back but I’m rarely happy with my performance after a game.”

“I want to get back to my level again, — and I can’t fully do that by playing left-back. I was in form playing in the middle, it’s frustrating.”
