There had been some rumours that Arsenal were lining up a £16 million move for Barcelona striker David Villa during this transfer window, and it seemed that the player himself was reportedly keen on making the journey to the Emirates, But the Spanish giants president Sandro Rosell has said ‘he is ours and we need him’.
Having already offloaded Marouane Chamakh, Arsenal fans are hoping that Wenger strengthens the squad this month and all reports were suggesting that Villa was the Frenchman’s number one target.
Rosell, however, has said the 31-year-old Spaniard is ‘off-limits’ as clubs circle for his signature.
As quoted on Sky Sports he said: “I completely rule out the transfer of Villa during the winter market.
“He is ours and we need him, there is a lot of the season left.”
Though there is a lot of speculation linking us with some great strikers, we have to be realistic and admit that Wenger will not go out and buy a great forward; it is much more likely that he brings in someone with talent that has a lot to give the game.
However, we have Theo Walcott who is on fire, Olivier Giroud who chips in and we can even play Lukas Podolski down the middle if we need to. So a striker should not be our priority and we should look at bringing in a defensive midfielder and a new centre back because they are our two weakest areas on the field.
Wenger won’t spend big, but hopefully he needs to invest in some new faces or the season will not get any better.
