Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has denied that the club were close to signing Santi Cazorla, but accepted that he is trying to work out a deal for the 27-year old Spaniard.
The Gunners are currently in the midst of their pre-season tour to the Far East, and following the side’s close 2-1 victory against a Malaysian side on Tuesday, Wenger denied that a deal had been struck for the Malaga winger, instead giving reporters a tongue-in-cheek response about his new interest in the players Arsenal had just played against.
“We are not close to signing Cazorla. We are still working that out,” Wenger told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.
“Maybe I sign some Malaysian players based on their performance today. Their defence was good, and their keeper was fantastic.”
The Gunners have travelled to Asia for a second consecutive year to build their fanbase in the region, and the locals’ appreciation for the North London side was clear to see from the ticket sales for the game. The organisers managed to sell 50,000 seats for the Gunners’ tie against Malaysia, while another 10,000 attended the side’s open training session on Monday.
