Arsene Wenger has done something right in the Robin van Persie saga

While Arsenal have drawn a lot of criticism in recent weeks for being a ‘selling club’, one area where Arsene Wenger seems to have clearly learnt from his past mistakes is that he has been better prepared for the inevitable. The departure of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri last season left the Gunners in a lurch, as was quite evident from their form at the start of the 2011-12 season.

In an effort to nullify that mistake, Wenger has moved quickly this summer to sign adequate replacements for Van Persie, and has done well to procure two quality internationals in Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud.

While Podolski has been a proven international over the last decade, having been capped over 100 times for Germany, Giroud is the new man on the block (note not kid), and has just broken into the French international set-up.

With both men available for pre-season, they should fit seamlessly into Arsenal’s style of play and should hit the ground running at the start of the new season.

While neither men is likely to score 30 goals a season this year, together one can expect them to get a lot more than RVP + Chamakh, so Arsenal you’re going to do just fine.

  • Technically, all you are trying to say is that Chamakh was useless for Arsenal last season and there is no one else to replace him? If that is the case, then off load him and buy more star players like Mesut Özil and/or Gonzalo Higuain.

Judging by their performance in EURO 2012, there is a tendency that, one of either Lukas Podolski or Olivier Giroud might not perform at their very best this season and many Arsenal Fans will be left disappointed again this season if they failed to win us any silverware.

Meanwhile, If Wenger really has confident in RVP and Walcott last two years, why didn’t he try and extend their contracts on time, instead of leaving it till now. I am tired of being a hater of players who left us at their prime time.

No farmer will Harvest, if he don’t plant! Arsenal should invest in players to get adequate results.

  • I completely agree. By signing Giroud and Podolski, Wenger, from the talk they had with Van Persie-in which they agreed not to talk anything to the press-knew very well that RVP will not renew his contract.

And how well has he done, to replace one striker with two! They will surely score goals, no doubt. Besides, we have seen it over the years that whenever a big player goes another steps up. When Henry went Adebayor stepped and scored 30 in 48. When an Nistelrooy left United, Ronaldo stepped up, so why can’t Giroud and Podolski?

What Wenger needs to do is to sign a high-profile playmaker, relieve Song of the creative responsibilities he had last season and sit back to give the defense better protection, and Arsenal can be champions of England again!

    Patrick,

Am very much agreed with you that is the way i think too, if RVP dnt want to renew his contract let him go now and get some cash on it and use it to buy playmaker, . Patrick am an arsenal fan for life and i want u to pls add me on facebook king aderemilekun or follow me on twitter @remmyltd. thanks waiting

Marcel…like N$sri, both rvp and theo have had a new contract offered and waiting for over a year now. Either the terms were unacceptable like Ashley’s was (ha!), or the players choose under advice from their ‘people’ to wait around for better offers. It seems there is little a club can do when the player can hold you to ransom like that…?

Can’t help thinking they have both f*cked themselves…..neither will get either the same level of tolerance or adulation somewhere else, and with these two new boys (and hopefilly at least one other) the Arse has already moved on.

There can be little doubt that this coming season, Arsenal will be sronger side with or without RVP.
With Podolski and Giroud plus the return of Wishere and Diaby (and Wenger’s buyings haven’t finished yet)RVP will not be missed. A quick sale and a replacement is essential, though.

Nice article, but RVP issue am tired and sick of it,two three to last 7yaers/season he was nobody just becos he do well last season he has become topic of discussion,he 4got arsenal has been paying his bills for been on treatment table all this while, how many open goal did he score and if he felt we don’t have big names HOLLANDS have all the big names he can thinks of HOW MANY GOALS DID HE SCORE IN EURO 12? He can go,players come and go arsenal remain. Gunners 4 life.

  • Sagir Ringim

I think it’s time for both RVP and Wilco to leave. They ar rebels without a cause.

  • Rollance

As is the case the club is greater than rvp n anyone else all we need is perfomance in the field an having believed in one Arsene wenger’s coaching skills lets focus on this season with or without Theo’s or rvp signatures as dwelling so much on these 2 wont do us any good coz to me ma loyalty shall always remain in Arsenal.’once agooner always agooner’

  • Only Marcel has said Anythng Reasonable inhere!Ds has absolutelty nothng to do wth RVP,PLS LEAVE HIM OUT OF THIS!!Selling our STAR Players Year-in & Out ISN’T de way to go!WE’R SUPPOSSED TO BE BUILDING ON OUR PROVEN STAR TALENTS,NOT SELLN DEM!DS POLICY OF WENGER & Co SUCKS!!!
And am shockd to c Fans Support such a Non-Rewardn Policy!

Yes let RVP go and go quickly, so we can peacefully rebuild our team and have the confidence of our new look Gunners !!! And we shall continue firing on all cylinders, the reason RVP got so many goals is that the style of play at arsenal creates uncountable chances for goals…so the new strikers will thrive too because the chances will continue to be created by our wingers…Ox, Gervinho, Walcott and so on…

Arsenal celebrated 125years of existence, we are the only team to have stayed continuously in to flight, (everton second).
We have 13league titles and 10 FA Cups, 3rd most successfull in England!
So my point is we have been doing thus for so long it is in out veins to rebuild and win, rebuild and win etc.
    Time is only judge!
The oil clubs are really flashes in the pan, take a step back or look at it from ‘birds eye view’ you will see it pays to be smart and at Arsenal n AW we have plenty don’t worry bout wat they say!
    COYG!
