Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has cleared the air about a potential move for Newcastle United enforcer Cheick Tiote by telling the club’s official website that the player will not be coming to the Emirates. After the departure of Alex Song to Barcelona, media circles have reported that the Frenchman is looking for an affordable replacement for the Cameroonian and Tiote was widely reported to be high on Wenger’s priority list.
Wenger spoke about the rumours, saying, “[Chiekh] Tiote is a good player, but he is not on his way to Arsenal.”
The club are, however, being strongly linked with a move for Tiote’s teammate Yohan Cabaye before the end of the transfer window as Arsenal are yet to fill the void left by Song. Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila is also said to be on Wenger’s wish list but he faces some serious competition from the Premier League’s biggest clubs.
The Frenchman later added about the possibility of a new acquisition saying, “Defensive midfielder? It depends on the quality of players who are available. If we can find somebody who can strengthen our squad with the quality we want we will do it.”
