Old foes Arsenal and Barcelona could be involved in yet another transfer tussle in the coming weeks, with the Catalans reportedly eyeing Gunners’ central midfielder Alex Song.
New Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova has been looking to tighten up the side’s defence over the summer, and sees the Cameroonian player as a perfect replacement for Seydou Keita, who left the club last month.
Vilanova is of the opinion that Song’s impressive playmaking abilities would make him a perfect fit for the Blaugrana, where an emphasis would be put on ball distribution.
£12.5 million is being touted as the price Barcelona are ready to offer initially for the 24-year old, with Vilanova also hopeful that Song’s close friendship with former Arsenal teammate Cesc Fabregas will help in clinching the deal.
Song, who was one of the Gunners’ best players last term, has not yet indicated a desire to leave the Emirates, but reports suggest that all that could change if Robin van Persie does make his much-anticipated exit from the North London club.
Song formed a telepathic connection with the Dutchman on the field, assisting a number of the striker’s goals, and could be ready to force a move to Nou Camp if the Gunners do not improve their squad before the close of the transfer window.
