A week is a long time in football. Arsenal vice-captain and fan favourite Thomas Vermaelen had pledged his future to the club barely a week ago, and that resolve is about to be seriously tested with the Daily Mail reporting that vultures at the Camp Nou have turned their attention to the Belgian center-back.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror before Belgian’s international friendly against England at Wembley, Vermaelen had declared his undying love for the club and the fans stating, ” I don’t see any reason to ever leave the club. I will stay at Arsenal forever. There will be no transfer for me.”
However, with new Barcelona head coach Tito Vilanova reportedly in the market for a center-back, Vermaelen’s name has come up in discussions.
AC Milan defender Thiago Silva has reportedly been priced out of a move, leaving Barcelona with three names on their shortlist. Chelsea’s Brazilian defender Alex is reportedly right up there with Vermaelen according to reports in the Daily Mail, while Barca are also considering the option of hijacking Vermaelen’s national teammate Jan Vertonghen right out of the clutches of Tottenham Hotspur.
Arsenal fans will be praying that Barcelona leave Vermaelen well alone, and if they do snatch Vertonghen, their smiles will no doubt get wider!
