Our big German defender, Per Mertesacker believes that Arsenal can beat Premier League Champions, City on Sunday. This comes after the Gunners impressive run of form late, not having lost a match this season. There is no doubt, that Arsenal’s successful Champion’s League opener against Montpellier has helped bolster the confidence within the squad.
Arsenal will hoping for a different result this time round as they lost 1-0 in the corresponding fixture last season and could have snatched a point despite fielding a weakened defense due to of injuries. Wenger will enter Sunday’s match with a variety of defenders to call upon but should stick with the tried and tested Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Gibbs selection. Arsenal currently have the best defensive record in the English premier League this season.
Thanks also to the work done by new assistant coach Steve Bould, the Gunners have conceded just two goals all season — one a goalkeeping error and the other a penalty — and Mertesacker claims this stronger foundation puts them in good stead for Sunday’s game.
“We are convinced that we can stay in the league, at the top, and that’s our target for Sunday,” he said. “Last year we lost at Man City. It was a very tight game so we will try to do better this time. We are in a better shape than last year because we are now in a good shape from the beginning [of the season]. Maybe we can get more there — we are well prepared now.”
Arsenal will not only be looking for a win on Sunday but will also be hoping to continue their impressive defensive display against a strong attacking lineup that City are sure to call upon.
