Not a great result against Sunderland but the future looks bright for Arsenal

On an opening day which saw 19 goals being scored by the non-elite of the Barclays Premier League, there was not one from the boot (or head for that matter) of an Arsenal player as Arsene Wenger’s new Gunners minus one Robin van Persie shot blanks against a hardworking but quite ordinary Sunderland outfit that would have sung songs of merriment all the way back to the North East.

Despite the doom and gloom surrounding the Emirates, Arsenal fans though will be best served to keep faith in Monsieur Wenger and his new buys, after all, how many players do we know who really make their Premier League debuts with a handful of goals (okay Michu and Petric did have a good day).

Wenger had already maintained before the start of the season it would take his new squad a few weeks to gel and Podolksi and Giroud are still slightly short of match fitness. However, there was still enough about the duo to suggest that Arsenal will get goals this season. Giroud’s movement during his second half stint looked excellent, and though he blazed wide with that golden chance late in the game, Arsenal will surely create enough chances for him and Podolski to score plenty as the season progresses.
