Cesc Fàbregas is arguably Arsenal’s most beloved player of the last decade, but what did he do in his last season with the Gunners? Played 36 matches, Scored 9 goals, created 17 more. Very respectable numbers till you look at his 2009–10 season stats. Having played the same number of games, Fabregas scored 19 goals and created a further 19 more. His first season at Barcelona? A respectable 15 goals and 20 assists.
What are we getting at? Pretty simple really. You keep hold of a player once his happiness level at the club expires, and you are bound to see a dip in results.
So, should the Gunners force Robin van Perise to see out his contract and allow him to go for free next season. No way! Not only will they lose 15-20 million in cold hard cash, but they are also certain to see a dip in his form.
It is one thing being ‘professional’, and it is another that your heart just isn’t in it anymore. It is easy being professional when the adrenaline is high and you are in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona, try a cold dreary evening at Stoke City where every defender is trying to cave in your ribs.
Sell RVP while the selling is good, there is no point keeping an unhappy player in the team.

Couldnt agree more.sell him now coz he’s lost his head, forgetting where he’s coming from
I think Arsenal need to set a precedent, which states that; we are ambitious, we want to hold on to our best players and we will make you uphold your contract. Otherwise, we will see our best players wanting to leave every year.
I agree with making statements but sell him and reinvest. the statement we need to make is buy worldclass proven players and our stars like fabregas, nasri and rvp wont want to leave its that simple. Can you blame rvp for thinking we aint going anywhere and all the people saying but we signed podolski and giroud why is he leaving…. well we only signed them cause they new they were cashing in on rvp. It will be interesting to see if he is sold if we are going to buy big my guess is a cheap egyptian left back and a 17 year old french kid!!
time for RVP leave the team as he has no dream toward gunner. this nothing to blame him as the director and manager of the club are to much holding the policy and this end up every seasson. so As bif fan of the club we have to accept it Arsenal Fc ONLY FIGHTING FOR TOP4 NOT TOP 2
100% agree, keep your best player ARSENE,otherwise will lose Wilshire, OX,SONG in a same way.
Walcott is in same situation
I agree completely. RVP has continued to show that he is no longer interested in the club, and forcing him to stay will be cancerous to the squad. Arsenal should sell RVP and reinvest in top class players with the money. Not youth players for the “future.”
out of pt from the main view of the article, but i wanted to highlight that i disagree that cesc was the most loved player of the last decade for arsenal. i dont think any player played ten years straight from 2001 to 2010, so i would dare to place ljungberg, pires, henry all in that zone.
Tottenham took a stance with Modric last season, did that back fire on them? Can’t be seen to be a puch over for any player who wants to just walk away before his contract expires, make him stay, if he has a bad season see who wants him in 12 months time, if he wants a big move he’ll play well
Let him rot in the reserves.. That’s what Fergie would do…
its completely different. if RVP stays he will have to impress because of his age. The other clubs arnt queuing up to buy him at the mo – if he plays badly this season no one will want a 30 year old with a bad attitude. This is a win win situation for Arsenal – RVP has shot himself in the foot to prove he can walk with a limp
Seeing that contracts are not worth the paper they`re written on and holding on to unhappy (unprofessional) players cause so much strife maybe we should adopt a basic two year contract with options? Yes, it makes long term planning a little difficult but we can do without the trauma. There is no real answer in this money mad world so you call the shots to suit yourself.
Absolutely wrong. Van is a professional football player, don’t forget that. Playing in a disinterested manner will only jeopardize his future career when he finally leaves Arsenal at the end of his contract, and he knows that.
To earn himself a big contract elsewhere, he must play to his best, or risk going to the likes of Feyernoord, other than to Real Madrid, Barca and others. We have seen players who have played out their contracts and performed as ones having 6-year-contracts. Michael Ballack at Bayern, Sol Campbell at Spurs, Raul Gonzalez at Schalke, Flamini at Arsenal, etc. Even Carlos Tevez, after what happened last season, played like nothing had happened to him and helped City win the title. In fact, in his own words this month, he claimed to be ‘committed’ to City after he had told the press back in Argentina that he ‘will never go back to Manchester’, meaning that Even Van Persie may have a change of mind in the course of the season, and extend his contract at Arsenal, so selling him now WILL be a very silly move.
Besides, Arsenal need to make a big statement that they have what it takes to retain their players, no matter what. Nasri played the hide and seek game, fooling Arsenal how he wanted to focus on the season before sitting down to discuss new terms, and then refused to renew his contract, and left for City. Van Persie was also offered a contract in September last year, and said the very same words as Nasri, fooling us, only to declare his true intentions on July 4th.(We all know what he said).
Arsenal MUST NOT ACCEPT FOOLERY from such players. Nasri won after fooling Arsenal, Van Persie MUST NOT WIN!!!!! He has a contract to respect and he must be forced to do so, or else all other players will take the same path and walk out.
In conclusion, Van Persie showed great disrespect to Arsenal by publishing such rubbish without the knowledge of the club, yet he and the club had agreed to not say anything till a final decision was taken. He breached the agreement and consequently put Arsenal in weak bargaining position were they to sell. He should therefore not be given any respect in his quest to leave. You don’t pay people who have been so patient with you for seven seasons during your injuries, Van Persie, do you?
Really??unlike cesc rvp will be playing for a new contract at a new club,so any dip means his wages and chances of joining a big club decreases, arsenal must keep him to make a point that they weren’t be bullied, having said that they’ll probably sell,my point is that your reasoning is flawed.
This is slightly embarrassing, but what can you do:
Did you actually watch him play in 2010/11. Because if you did, you obviously missed the fact that he was always coming back from injury that season. It was straight after the World Cup, and he was clearly missing the bite. And yet, here you come and proclaim it was a mental issue. Do think again!
If RVP wants to go to a respectable club, he needs to play well. If he has a below-average season now, who’ll want to sign him? Especially for free. No one will give him 200K a week to play poorly. That’s also something to consider. Cesc was lamost guaranteed a spot in Barca, whether or not he played well in 2010/11.
And the final issue is: players who have recurring injuries and are usually unable to stay fit throughout the season rarely risk more injuries, and this means that they don’t go headfirst into the flames of he battle. They often choose to play it smart. Is that because their contracts are always expiring? Is that because they are “wantaway”?
Arsenal should hold on to RVP to show they are about something more than just money. If RVP wants to play at all, he needs to work hard and focus on playing, not talking. So no “destabilizing influence” as well – who will want an aging AND controversial star? The fact is, if RVP plays well enough, Arsenal can challenge for trophies again, so he could actually achieve one of his goals even without moving out. He would miss that chance if he started talking cr*p to younger teammates or disrespecting the club.
Like the writter said, there is no point of holding unhappy player in the club, once the guy has decided to not exted his contrat the club should allow him to go,but let him go to abroad.
Arsenal should avoid overspending only to retain (please) RVP. The club should spend what it can afford. Let RVP go; he now feels bigger than the club and he be replaced immediately with another quality player. With or without the player life goes on.
Sometimes we should not reduce everything to money considerations. RVP leaving Arsenal has far more consequences than you can equate with money. First is the pride of the club and most importantly the bad precedence it will create. I think the club should ask him why he wants to leave and as much as possible try to meet his demands. I am not sure RVP will be unreasonable in his demands. The only problem Arsenal has is Arsenal themselves and their rigid policy.
let the young man go if he does’nt want to pen a new deal………
I doubt very much if Kroenke will throw away £20 – 30m on matter of principle. They were going to hold Nasri till Kroenke came over for a Board Meeting and told them to get real and take the money.
RVP or no RVP what concerns me most as Arsenal fan is how d club will end d trophy drought. which depend on the club attracting and buying world class player to replace the out going.
