PSG’s President Nasser al-Khelaifi, has revealed that he tried to get Arsene Wenger to leave Arsenal in favor of PSG which has already seen the French club spend £212m as they hope to make the club one of the top sides in Europe.
Whilst speaking to the Guardian, Al-Khelaifi said that PSG tried to persuade Wenger to leave the North London club last summer but the Frenchman remained loyal to Arsenal despite a five year lucrative offer. Al-Khelaifi was hoping to use some of the influence he had established while working with Wenger at al-Jazeera where Wenger has been a pundit for a number of years and where Al-Khelaifi is general manager.
‘He works with us for four or five years. He’s a fantastic guy, a great manager also. Arsene Wenger doesn’t want to leave Arsenal, he is very loyal to Arsenal,’ Al-Khelaifi said.
Wenger has recently rejected talks of signing a new deal for Arsenal, opting to rather wait and see how the current season goes before signing himself over for a longer period with the North London club. Wenger’s current contract expires in 2014 with the Arsenal manager already hinting that he will not continue at the Emirates if he is not successful with the current team. Despite Wenger coming under fire over this summer’s transfer window, having sold RVP and Song, it seems Le Prof has had a master plan all along seeing depth in the squad when no one else could.
Arsenal are currently off to a good start this season and will be hoping to carry that form on in the next couple of weeks where they’ll face City on Sunday and then current log leaders, Chelsea next.
