It’s being reported that Arsenal are interested in signing a keeper during the January transfer window. Now, before everyone starts screaming at once, let me say that Szczesny and Mannone are good keepers but as it stands, they’re not world class. Szczesny is the most likely to become something great while Mannone has hinted at the possible return to Italy recently. So that leaves the aging Fabianski and the newly promoted Martinez.
We’ve never really been short on keepers at Arsenal but recently, our keeping standards have dropped. Not to the point where you’d say that it’s a problem but we don’t seem to have a regular starter that can put his hand up and say, ‘I’m the finished product’. Like I said, Szczesny is closest to that but even the Pole has some difficulty. His distribution and kicking haven’t been the best and that’s something he needs to work on if he wants to become one of Europe’s most elite keepers.
Hugo Lloris was a keeper who I thought Arsene Wenger should’ve snatched up. He’s young and talented and will probably do well at Spurs. However, that’s milk out of the jug now. So far, Arsenal has been linked to Michel Vorm and whilst the Swansea keeper is good, I don’t see him as being exceptionally better than any of the keepers we currently have now. In fact, I’d even go so far as to say that Martinez or Shea should get the crack before Vorm. However, just because Vorm isn’t the right fit for Arsenal doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be looking in the market.
Let’s just wait and see on this one. If Mannone remains committed to us then there may be no need to find a replacement to Szczesny. If he does go, Wenger may look to bring someone in to cover Szczesny.
Do you think Arsenal have enough depth in the youth to nullify any need to buy a keeper, if that happens?

Let us not deceive ourselves, we must sign a goalkeeper. Both mannone and szceny are not goalkeepers that can lead us to silverware, as present I will rate mannone higher because of recent form. We should not be experimenting with second rated goalkeepers, we can see how Carzola, podolski and giroud bring it power to our play. We need a goalkeeper period and if we don’t sign a goalkeeper in January we wl live to regret
With the challenges ahead it is essential Wenger gets another keeper to go with Szczesny and I`m surprised he didn`t pick one up in the summer. The January window may not be the right time for transfers but there is a broad selection and the prices don`t break the bank.
Myself I`d go for experience someone with a couple of years left in him.
We could do with a world class keeper but very few out there better than what we have, hart buffon neuer and casillas cant be bought so why buy for the sake of it. Look at united spending 20 million on de gea and the guy cant even catch a cross!
Norwich Keeper is better
We need to take a better look at Martinez. But accept that Manone and Flappyhandski will never be more than OK reserves. Both are weak in the air and fail to command the box. They are all decent shot stoppers but NOT good decision makers. Recruit a top keeper who is nearing his career end and who can work with Szcesney.
Fabianski…..ageing really? i would say brad friedl (who is in his 40s) is ageing fabianski is what 27 he has 10 years left in him. keepers normally hit their peak around 26/27 fabianski has been unlucky with injuries and his confidence.has been shattered. however he has now been replaced even as the no.2 keeper and with his contract running out in june he will leave just like almunia did. i even expect him to be delisted in january should wenger decide to bring another player and arsenal still be in the champions league.
