Does the Walcott saga concerning his need to play up front sound a bit wishy- washy to you? Hear me out for a second. Walcott has come out stating that his contract has never been disputed about the money but rather about his need to play upfront.
Now, I understand that Walcott wants to play upfront, but it seems too convenient to me that all of a sudden, Walcott isn’t getting the playing time and now we hear it’s because the winger and Wenger can’t come to a decision about where Walcott should play. Frankly, I think that’s a cover. A really good cover because Walcott actually does want to play upfront.
In my opinion, Walcott wanted the pay raise. He saw the club in dire straits selling RVP and Song and saw a nice niche to put the club at ransom for an extra 25k per week. Now all of a sudden that we’re doing well and he’s not needed, he’s trying to make it seem like he was the innocent bystander in this whole thing and that Wenger just wouldn’t give him the playing time.
Whatever. It’s clear to me that Wenger is open to trying new attacking options now that Giroud isn’t firing. He’s used Gervinho and Podolski already. If Walcott stopped sulking, I don’t see why Wenger wouldn’t give him a shot too. The fact of the matter is that Walcott is a wing. He’s brilliant playing there when his confidence is high. When it’s low, he sucks and therein lays the reason Walcott would struggle upfront. Strikers are clinical finishers and often play with an air of confidence and authority. Maybe Walcott should rather concentrate on just playing for now and show Wenger how good he could be up front. No one cares anymore what Walcott does. If he leaves then so be it. If he’s going to stay, then we don’t want to hear him sulking about how he’s not playing upfront. Just get on with it. If Walcott wants emulate Henry then he should do what he did-play each game well- then maybe, just maybe, he’ll get his shot up front.
It seems to me like Theo wants to skip a step in the process…
